Top 5 Things Wildland Crews Should Do Before The Call Comes In

by | | 0 comment(s)

Wildland firefighting demands quick mobilization and long operational hours. Being prepared and equipped before assignments helps crews move in the field with confidence.

Continue reading for five ways your crew can better prepare for the line.

1. REVIEW THE CONDITION OF YOUR PPE

Personal protective equipment should be inspected for signs of wear that could affect performance on the line. When inspecting PPE, look for:

  • Thinning fabric in high-stress areas
  • Frayed stitching or damaged closures
  • Heat or abrasion damage
  • General breakdown from extended use

2. MAKE SURE YOUR CREWS' GEAR SUPPORTS MOVEMENT

Wildland brush clothing should not only provide protection but also allow you to move comfortably during field operations. Whether your crew needs something more lightweight and breathable for long miles of hiking or something more durable and abrasion-resistant for demanding terrain and extended wear, having gear that supports both protection and mobility helps crews stay focused on the line.

3. CONFIRM FIELD EQUIPMENT IS READY FOR THE LINE

Field equipment, like pumps, backup parts, and drip torches are part of daily operations and should be looked over routinely. Make sure your line of equipment is in good condition, functional, and properly maintained to help reduce the chance of operational delays once crews are on the line.

4. HAVE BACKUP OR REPLACEMENT GEAR AVAILABLE

Is your crew prepared if gear needs to be replaced during assignments? Having backup gear available helps crews stay ready if equipment becomes damaged or heavily used.

Common items needing replacement:

  • Worn-down gloves
  • Eye protection with scratched or damaged lenses
  • Headlamp batteries used during long shifts
  • Hydration components showing wear
  • Tool handles with cracking, splintering, or looseness
  • Drip torch components, such as worn wicks, seals, or damaged spouts

5. REVIEW TEAM COORDINATION AND OPERATIONAL READINESS

Equipment readiness is only part of being prepared for deployment. Making sure crew members understand roles, communication expectations, and response procedures can help operations run smoothly once assignments begin.

Take the time to work with your crew and align on team expectations so that everyone is on the same page when the calls come in.
