Protect What Protects You: Maintenance Tips For Wildland Clothing

by | | 0 comment(s)

Wildland PPE takes a beating on the fireline. Exposure to heat, smoke, dirt, and debris can wear your gear down over time. Regular inspections and maintenance don’t just extend the life of your gear, but they also ensure it’s always ready to perform when it matters most.

In this blog, we’re breaking down simple ways to clean, inspect, and maintain your wildland gear so it stays reliable, year after year.

INSPECT REGULARLY

Before packing away and cleaning your gear, take a few minutes to check for signs of wear that could compromise protection:

  • Look for thin or shiny spots, holes, or melted areas that indicate heat damage or material wear.
  • Inspect stitching, seams, and closures to make sure everything is secure and functioning properly.
  • Replace gear that’s excessively worn, contaminated, or no longer fits.

CLEAN GEAR = SAFE GEAR

After extended assignments, miles of hiking, and exposure to heat and smoke, dirt, ash, and fuel residue can start to break down your clothing’s protective fibers. This means it’s time for a good clean. Always follow the manufacturer’s care guidelines whenever possible, as instructions can vary between fabrics and brands.

  • Wash FR clothing separately and according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Use warm or cold water, never hot, to help preserve the fabric’s protective qualities.
  • Avoid dry cleaning, as the chemicals can damage the fire-resistant properties.

DRYING AND STORAGE

Your gear can handle the heat on the line, but high temperatures during drying can damage flame-resistant properties and lead to shrinkage. How you dry and store your FR clothing makes a big difference in helping it maintain its shape, strength, and protection.

  • Skip the dryer when possible or use a low-heat setting to reduce the risk of shrinkage.
  • Line dry whenever you can to preserve fabric strength.
  • Store gear in a clean, dry area. Hang or lay flat to maintain shape and prevent unnecessary stress on seams and fibers.
  • Keep gear out of direct sunlight to minimize fading and fabric breakdown.
  • Allow airflow during storage to help maintain fabric quality.

EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR WILDLAND GEAR

A few extra steps can help your gear last longer:

  • Wash gear promptly after use to remove sweat, ash, and residue that can weaken fibers over time.
  • Avoid bleach and fabric softeners, as they can reduce flame-resistant properties and damage the fabric.
  • Store gear carefully between assignments in a clean, dry area to maintain its shape and protective properties.

WHAT NOT TO DO

A few things to avoid when caring for your FR clothing:

  • DON'T DRY CLEAN. The chemicals can damage flame-resistant fibers.
  • DON'T USE BLEACH. It breaks down protective properties and weakens fabric.
  • DON'T USE FABRIC SOFTENER. It can leave a coating that reduces flame-resistance properties.
